It is essential to consider certain factors when laying your wooden deck. Thus, during the dry and wetter seasons, the wood of your terrace can contract or, on the contrary, undergo swelling. It is necessary to take into account these possible variations in volume so as not to create exaggerated gaps between the different boards, or on the contrary not to leave too few spaces. The spacing of your boards thus depends on the humidity of the latter, their width and the balance of the place where your terrace is located. It is estimated that a reasonable spacing is between the minimum of 3 mm and the maximum of 12 mm for laying decking.

For example, for very humid wood, there could be a shrinkage of the boards in summer and attains 2 mm. It is therefore recommended to place a board spacer of about 4 mm to monitor the future gap between the boards. This precaution makes it possible to reduce the effect of the extremes of the climate to respect the maximum spacing of 12 mm. On the other hand, for very dry wood laid over 12 cm, the expansion can go up to 3 mm. A spacer of about 6 mm will allow to maintain a gap between the boards greater than 3 mm when the wood takes on volume in the wet season.
